now i realise looking at the "bigger picture " is not probably a pass time most indulge in - and that some will ask whats the relevance to us ??
but for info - this may be of interest to some http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2010/16jul_ilws/ it is of course "america centric " but if this DID occur it could have profound effects for us all ( unlike the usual hollywood portrayal of disasters which only happen there )
i particularly liked the stunning conclusion of the attached report here http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2009/21jan_severespaceweather/ that solar flares can stop your toilet working - classic
like we might not have a few other things to worry about ?? and whilst the report concludes that radio comms etc may recover as the event dies down - the fact remains that when the last big one happened back in 1850 something - we did not HAVE radio comms - only the telegraph and the flare ended up setting fire to the operators shacks
any ways , just as an exercise in lateral thinking , what are you going to do if this came to pass ?? - make active preparation as best you can - or bury your head in the sand and hope it will go away - ( bit like me really ??? )
time to look into faraday shielding for that spare rig methinks

for those of you who have been sat there thinking - whats he on about - this does not affect me - this from an email alert i received this morning
GLOBAL ERUPTION: During the early hours of August 1st, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded a complex global disturbance on the Earth-facing side of the sun. Most of the sun's northern hemisphere was involved in the event, which included a long-duration C3-class solar flare, a "solar tsunami," and a massive filament eruption. As a result of these blasts, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading toward Earth. High-latitude geomagnetic storms and auroras are possible when the cloud arrives a few days hence. Check http://spaceweather.com for movies and updates. now bare in mind the sun is JUST waking up after a quiet period - so what going to happen when it gets going this cycle ?? - the effects will hit us on the 3rd of august - may be of interest to those in the HF team - and possibly if you are interested in "auroral " propagation techniques |

looks like old SOL is out to get us
latest from spaceweather.com email alerts QUOTE: SOLAR BLAST JUST MISSES EARTH: On Saturday, August 7Th, magnetic fields around sunspot 1093 erupted. NASA spacecraft and many amateur astronomers photographed the blast, which produced a strong M1-class solar flare and hurled a coronal mass ejection (CME) into space--apparently just missing the sun-Earth line. The explosion also made whooshing sounds in the loudspeakers of some shortwave radios. Visit http://spaceweather.com for audio recordings and movies of this latest solar event.END QUOTE |
